Road runner and Climate Change

I was inspired by Blog Action Day 2009 to write the following post. It is based on an article that I read a couple of years ago. I did not have time to do research so I did not actually register it. Here is the link to the post that I actually registered.

Fact: The state of New Mexico runs a passenger train service. Fact: The construction of this service significantly reduced carbon emissions in the state.

Conclusion: It did this by reducing the number of cars on New Mexico’s roads. – FALSE

Actually, the Road Runner significantly reduced carbon emissions by increasing the amount of freight transported by rail rather than truck within the state. It also led to a slight increase in manufacturing within the state.

This happened because the state purchased all passenger rail lines in New Mexico and began to regulate all rail traffic. Because you see corporations are not really rational. Because the state purchased the rail lines that used to be both freight and passenger, the local freight rail company had the money to construct freight rail lines and they HAD to. Because the state was actually paying attention to how they were doing things, they actually created a system to choose what trains to run when.

Because the freight system is actually organized, companies can reliably gauge how long it is going to take to get products to market and, even more amazing, how much it is going to cost.

Everything is interconnected. When we recognize and live within those connections, the good effects are multiple.

  1. Here from IComLeaveWe. I don’t have anything profound to say about this post, but I found it really interesting. I bet getting more trucks off the roads means less highway maintenance required too, though I know then the rail lines need to be maintained instead.
